Card Grading Explained: How It Works and Is It Worth It?
Whether you collect Pokémon, football stickers or Topps Chrome rookies, you've probably seen cards sealed in clear plastic “slabs” with a number on the label. That's a graded card – and the grade can make a huge difference to what a card is worth. Here's a plain-English guide to how grading works and when it's worth doing.
What is card grading?
Card grading is an independent assessment of a trading card's condition. A grader examines the card and gives it a score, usually from 1 to 10, then seals it in a tamper-evident case with a label showing the grade. The slab protects the card and proves its condition to future buyers.
What do graders look at?
- Centring – how evenly the image sits within the borders, front and back.
- Corners – sharp, square corners score higher than soft or bent ones.
- Edges – chipping, whitening or rough cuts lower the grade.
- Surface – scratches, print lines, dents or marks on the card face.
What do the grades mean?
- 10 – Gem Mint: virtually perfect under magnification.
- 9 – Mint: one very minor flaw.
- 8 – Near Mint–Mint: slight wear visible on close inspection.
- 7 and below: increasingly visible wear, creases or damage.
The jump in value between a 9 and a 10 can be dramatic for popular cards, which is why consistent, accurate assessment matters.
Which cards are worth grading?
As a rule of thumb, grade a card if it is valuable or likely to become valuable and in very good condition. Good candidates include rookie cards, numbered parallels, vintage holos, first editions and cards with sentimental value you want to protect. Common cards in average condition usually aren't worth the cost.
How to prepare your cards
- Handle cards by the edges with clean, dry hands.
- Put each card in a penny sleeve, then a semi-rigid or top-loader.
- Don't clean or press cards – altered cards can't be graded.
- List the cards you're sending so nothing gets mixed up.
